Street Art Festival 2025: Past Perspectives

Curatorial Approach:

The city has always served as a fascinating backdrop for artistic creation. Public spaces, particularly those in Olomouc, have become fertile ground for the works of the most prominent artists of their time. The baroque fountains of Olomouc are still a tangible testament to this legacy—their unique craftsmanship and ingenious integration into the city’s structure exemplify the harmonious fusion of art and environment. Another significant era of artistic flourishing in urban spaces emerged in the early 20th century, this time with monumental statues commemorating historical figures. A striking example is the statue of T. G. Masaryk on Žižkov Square, which has become a symbol not only of a specific era but also of the ideals that continue to resonate within the collective consciousness of society.
It is precisely these artistic achievements, which give Olomouc its distinctive character and unmistakable cultural identity, that form the central theme of the SAFE Olomouc 2025 festival. This festival, which has long been dedicated to fostering a dialogue between the city, art, and its inhabitants, will focus this year on reflecting upon and reinterpreting both contemporary and historical artistic interventions that have shaped the city’s face.
High-quality art in public spaces should always respect and enrich its surroundings, becoming an organic part of the environment. Unfortunately, in recent years, we have increasingly witnessed artistic works that neglect this principle—disrupting the harmony of their setting instead of complementing it. This trend has inspired us to dedicate the 18th edition of the Olomouc Street Art Festival to a critical reflection on existing and even lost artistic interventions in Olomouc’s public spaces. Through this festival program, we aim to spark a discussion about what public spaces should look like—spaces that are not only aesthetically valuable but also meaningfully integrated into the life of the city and its inhabitants.

Open Call

Proposals should be submitted by 1st of June 2025.

It is crucial for the project to reflect the curatorial approach of Street Art Festival 2025 and a purpose of the building.

The selection of the winning designs will be made in cooperation with an expert jury.

The project can be implemented either from September 1st to September 12 or September 23 to September 30 2025.

The Wall belongs to the building of High School of Graphic Arts and Media.

For artists:

Selected artists will be provided with accommodation and funds for transport and materials. As well, the selected artists will be rewarded with a predetermined financial award of 1200 EUR.

Město odjakživa představuje fascinující kulisu pro uměleckou tvorbu. Veřejný prostor, a především ten olomoucký, se stal živnou půdou pro realizace těch nejvýznamnějších umělců své doby. Olomoucké barokní kašny jsou toho dodnes hmatatelným důkazem – jejich jedinečné zpracování a důmyslné zakomponování do struktury města je příkladem harmonického propojení umění a prostředí. Další významná éra, kdy městský prostor zažil výrazný umělecký rozkvět, přišla na počátku 20. století. Tentokrát však jako plátno pro monumentální pomníky významných historických osobností. Jedním z nepřehlédnutelných příkladů je pomník T. G. Masaryka na Žižkově náměstí, který se stal symbolem nejen určité doby, ale i ideálů, jež dodnes rezonují společenským vědomím.

Právě takové realizace, které Olomouci propůjčují její jedinečný charakter a nezaměnitelnou kulturní identitu, se stávají ústředním tématem festivalu SAFE Olomouc 2025. Festival, jenž se dlouhodobě věnuje dialogu mezi městem, uměním a jeho obyvateli, se v letošním ročníku zaměřuje na reflexi a reinterpretaci nejen současných, ale i historických uměleckých intervencí, které formují tvář města.

Kvalitní umění ve veřejném prostoru by mělo vždy respektovat a obohacovat své okolí, být jeho přirozenou součástí. Bohužel, v posledních letech jsme stále častěji svědky toho, že mnohé realizace tento princip opomíjejí – namísto harmonického dialogu s prostředím jej narušují. Právě tato tendence nás inspirovala k zaměření 18. ročníku olomouckého street art festivalu na kritickou reflexi již existujících či zaniklých uměleckých intervencí v olomouckém prostoru. Skrze tento festivalový program chceme otevřít diskusi o tom, jak by měl vypadat veřejný prostor, který je nejen esteticky hodnotný, ale také smysluplně integrovaný do života města a jeho obyvatel.
